What is Argentium Silver?
Argentium Silver is a sterling silver alloy invented in the 1990’s by Master Silversmith, Peter Johns at Middlesex University, London. His initial research concentrated on eliminating firestain in traditional Sterling silver by using the element germanium. He produced an alloy with more silver content and replaced 1.2% of the copper content with germanium resulting in 935 sterling silver. 935 Argentium has now been superseded by 940 and 960 which contain an even higher quantity of pure silver. In addition to a firestain-free surface Argentium silver has a whiter colour, antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties and an increased tarnish resistance.

Higher silver purity
Argentium’s 940 and 960 grades set new purity levels for silver. (These are recognised by 925 and 958 UK Hallmarks) At Violet May Jewellery 935, 940 and 960 grade Argentium silver is used. Most designs with the exception of some glass bead earrings are stamped with the Argentium winged unicorn or sometimes 925.
Brighter, whiter colour
Argentium Silver is brighter and whiter than platinum, white gold, palladium and traditional Sterling.
Naturally beautiful
Argentium Silver does not require plating and is the natural, bright colour of pure silver. The firestain that forms on the surface of sterling silver when heated during the making process does not form on the surface of Argentium silver therefore requiring less abrasive finishing.
Highly tarnish resistant
Argentium Silver is low maintenance, easy to care for and simple to keep clean. All purchases will include a care leaflet and a silver cleaning cloth to use exclusively for keeping your Argentium piece looking great.
Hypoallergenic
Argentium is suitable for those who are unable to wear traditional sterling silver. Sarah of Violet May Jewellery is able to wear earrings made from Argentium silver but reacts to traditional sterling silver.
Responsible
Argentium Silver is responsibly made from ethically sourced silver. It is certified 100% recycled.
